Portable biogas digester bag

We offer an innovative climate friendly solution which is a portable biogas digester bag with an associated financial and social incentive system. The solution was initiated because biogas projects promoted eagerly however, most of them are not functioning in most of developing countries, in Africa and Asia. For example, we have seen that clean cooking stove projects with bio-energy were terminated soon after NGOs or international agencies left in Ethiopia. Out of the 55 installed in West Bali, only 40% are currently functioning.
Therefore, there is a need of developing an incenting system, which helps farmers continuously using the digester and brings higher biogas productivity. To accelerate biogas utilization, our company is developing portable biogas digester to support the system (Takama, et al, 2011).
There are three common problems in conventional bioenergy projects:

And our system with lease portable biogas digester offers benefits as the followings:
Eliminating initial investment because we sell bioenergy service through leasing portable biogas bagConcerning the operating and maintaining cost, it would be less expensive due to it is almost zero maintenance as the bag is provided as a lease.Together with coffee and cacao roasting business, biogas demand becomes irreplaceable demand.
The biogas bag converts different types of waste into biogas and enables the farmers to be self-reliant in power for different uses. For example, biogas will be used not only for household cooking, but also the roasting of coffee and cacao which added extra value to the raw agricultural commodities. Biogas roasting will create a unique branding to the coffee and cacao, which is expected to increase their price even higher. Moreover, the agricultural wastes from cacao and coffee as well as other residuals from the agroforestry practice are the feedstock of the biogas production. Also, the organic fertilizer will be generated as a sub-product which can be used to support plantation activity. This system approach will give incentives farmers to use our biogas bag. To realize our system, it requires engineering solution, namely the portable biogas bag. The material used to make the bag is PE membrane (Polyethylene), which is resistant to sunlight and durable.

Overall, use of the biogas bag will create a closed-circle production that limits the consumption of natural raw materials, reduces environmental impact (i.e climate change mitigation), and supports economic growth by providing clean energy.
The environmental benefits are described as the following:
Biogas utilization has been recognized for reducing emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as methane (CH4). It reduces farm gaseous effluent pollution in manure.The system reduces agricultural waste because it used for biogas production.Biogas utilization will reduce firewood consumption in Bali as well as in Africa which results reduction of air pollution, deforestation and at the same time increasing healthiness of community and water availability.Biogas utilization promotes gender equality because the time spent collecting firewood by women and children could be put in better use.Organic fertilizer can be also produced by biogas process therefore biogas utilization promotes organic fertilizer consumption which is more environmental-friendly and economical advantage for the farmers.The biogas digester bag is a user-friendly technology due to its low maintenance and simple design.By using biogas, farmers can be self-sufficient, because the quality of their produce will also be boosted through the use of organic fertilizer, a biogas by-product.
In terms of readiness, the technology has been tested in local environment, in Bali, by using local feedstock: coffee husks, animal waste, and food waste. Also, the project is endorsed as an European Union Commission project called GreenWin and TransRISK. Moreover, concerning potential market, market definition has been being identified in Africa and it is likely to be successfully done because we have experienced some projects in Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Senegal. Plus, we are actively working in partnership with local partners such as Kenya National Cleaner Production Centre (KNCPC), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) in Africa and University of Cape Town (UTC).
Scaling up this system will require adjustment in the following parameters:
Size, digester bag can be designed according to feedstock availability. If the waste is abundant, the bag can be produced in a larger size.Type of waste, animal waste, the biogas digester can be used in Africa as well.Reproducibility of the design, thanks to the simplicity of the technology, the reproducibility is relatively high.Furthermore, by being portable, if the installation is not functioning, it can be easily removed, whereas fixed biogas domes are just abandoned and require more space.Our portable biogas digester bag can be easily delivered to remote areas in Bali because it is less space consumed
This system involves the intellectual property element because this system has geographical distinction -there are no portable biogas digester bags with an associated financial and social incentive system exists in Bali yet- in comparison with other similar existing biogas digester bag. However it is not yet included into our business strategy because it is still under development.
We expect some collaboration in terms of financing and distribution partnership from aboard, for example European and African organizations, in order to disseminate and improve this system.
